about ebc

east bristol contemporary (ebc) was an artist-led gallery based in Bristol between 2016 and 2024, and was the organisation that Day School was born out of.

ebc was established to counteract the lack of professional showing spaces for early career contemporary artists in Bristol, focussed on staging a unique and diverse programme of exhibitions and events.

we worked with artists from all over the UK and sometimes further afield, often working with artists within the first 10 years of their career. ebc was an inclusive organisation, actively seeking to work with artists from diverse backgrounds and with diverse practices, representing the vibrancy of art practice in the UK. ebc additionally aimed to support artists based in the South West by regularly working with them and bringing their artworks to new audiences in the city.

we ran free events for the public, including artist talks/tours, workshops, screenings, performances and opening events as well as a long running and well known instagram residency.

the ebc night school; was a series of artist talks, workshops, and 1-2-1s aimed at adult learners who have an interest in contemporary art. through the night school, participants learn about practicing artists’ methods and research, as well as learning about and trying out various artistic processes. the night school took place both online and at Arnolfini, Bristol, continuing our interest in collaboration with cultural partners in the city.

ebc valued paying artists fairly and appropriately, and with funding from Arts Council England and other funders we have been able to do so, using Artists Union England and a-n rates as our guide.

ebc exhibitions were located on the first floor of the trinity centre, bristol

ebc was co-directed by jack lewdjaw & karanjit panesar.

ebc’s work has appreciated particular support from hannah walker, kate morris-millar, chris alton, sophie hill, and alice spearing.
